There was a first-floor bar called Sirs in Cardiff only men were allowed in. You needed a key and it had a dancefloor that lit up. Sirs was on the first floor of 60 St Mary Street in Cardiff city centre - where well-known restaurant Le Monde is now. It was a men's only venue which was so discreet a woman who worked downstairs went months without realising it was there. It had an owner known to all, and a dancefloor that lit up - described as being like something from Saturday Night Fever.

On evenings at work, one woman who worked on the ground floor watched ice buckets disappear never knowing where they were going. Sirs' key policy meant no-one had to stand in the street queuing for entry so customers could feel safe in a very different climate to today. Memories of Sirs and other aspects of gay life in Cardiff in the 70s and 80s, before the cultural changes that have made life for LGBTQ people today very different, have been shared as part of a project being run by Pride Cymru to get people to record their memories.

Life was not all discrete bars. There were discos and dances at leisure centres that were always booked under ambiguous names like 'women's dance'. There were marches, the horrific dawning of the dangers of Aids and there was discrimination. A men's membership bar off St Mary Street. Members were given a key to get in. Described as being "very discreet". A female member said: I think I was the only woman to be issued with one. Management preferred the gay guys to go in the Castle Bar.

All the songs sounded the same but no one cared". Oooh it was fun! Very discreet, you went upstairs and knocked a door with a small flap that opened and if they knew you then in. If not then out. Lenny was very flamboyant and his club attracted gay people of both sexes as well as punk rockers There was very little trouble at the club - the doorman, or bouncer, was a fearsome local man who was reputed to have serious connections with London gangs.

It was rough and ready and I well recall a very handsome blonde lad playing jazz on the trumpet whilst a large black guy had his hand inside his fly doing naughty things".

The women who did get in were only allowed half pints. If you didn't have a key, you could take your chance by claiming you were a friend of a member and trying to blag your way in. Almost all of Cardiff's gay and lesbian bars have gone, but the role they played in the lives of the people who went there lives on. More than one person who spoke to us about their memories described nights out as being more about community than a good time - although both were important.

Belinda Davis is 44, and Barry-based. She remembers calling Lesbian Line, just before she turned 18, to ask for help. Zoe Balfour was a DJ at tea dances, queer ballroom and latin dances where she also taught dancing. She came out aged 20, in after returning from five years in America, where she now lives again.

It was a great venue and we filled it, we had a huge dance, but that was also when they realised it was queer and they refused our booking the next time we tried to go there.

I got to know Annie and Zoe, who I think ran them, quite well. Throughout the decades, there were gay-only, or gay-friendly venues at everything from hotels to a super club. I always remember there being a lot of older men all sat round tables with little lighting and candles on the tables. When it first converted to Terminus it was nicknamed The Gayhound. It was very small and a small dance floor.

The owner was Lenny Lancaster but the day-to-day running was by Bob Showbiz. He had certainly been to prison, this was no secret and was common knowledge. I asked him if he was thinking of retiring. He told me that if he was required for a job he got a phone call and went, no questions, no options. Then he became a sergeant, workign in the city centre and docks including on the day of a Royal visit.

They were in a state of high excitement and clutching Union Jack flags. The crowd were on tip-toe and craning their necks ready to catch sight of the royal party. They were waving gaily to the crowd and imitating the royal wave.

This was followed quite closely by the royal procession and attendant vehicles who were given the same welcome before disappearing in the same direction as Lenny. I told them that it was a pair of famous local showbiz personalities, probably en route to meet the real Queen. What a stunt to pull, what a character!

But the same stunt might even be dangerous if you tried it today! Tunnel became the first "super club". To mark its 30th anniversary, a huge reunion party was held.

To find out more visit the website. When we started going out, Aids was just becoming a thing. By the mid s there was more knowledge about what Aids was, and how it spread but when he was first going out, it was a terrifying unknown. People carrying banners saying "glad to be gay" and balloons were captured on video walking down Queen Street chanting "We are everywhere". It was quite life-changing because at that time we were fighting for the age of consent, fighting against Aids discrimination.

I did get yelled at and often yelled back, but luckily never got beaten up, other friends haven't been so lucky. I grew up in Cardiff so it was always known to me, the areas, what to watch out for, so I didn't have lots of fear.

Pub closing time was always a time to be careful. If they were planning a night at a new venue some of the women would go first to check if it was "safe". But within 10 to 15 years, we started to get things like the age of consent being raised, getting legal rights. When the Kings Cross was first threatened with closure, a campaign started, and given how much people loved it, it's no surprise when it closed there was devastation.

I practically lived in that pub. I was devastated when it closed. The staff were lovely, it was quite a good crowd and a mix of men and women. I just felt like I was normal there. I know that happened to me. A group of women took me into their circle and from that, I met other people. They would want to go out and have a good time but there was no hassle for them. The pub was busy most nights of the week, Francis recalled but on Sundays they had to close at Current gay bars are different.

Now, a lot of straight people go - which makes approaching people if dating trickier, says Belinda. Others say the modern approach to dating through apps and websites could kill off the city's remaining gay bars.
